The Reality of English Language Learning in our Schools
In schools today, almost every teacher has an English Language Learner in their class. Some students we don’t even realize are English Language Learners, other than noticing that they may be from a different culture. For other students, it is obvious that they struggle with English and we have to provide further accommodations. All of our students are individuals, and we must meet their needs and care about them just the same.
The statistics tell all:
There are 47 million people in the US that speak a language other than English in the home (18% of the population)
During 1997-2007 16 states had a 200% increase in English Learners (Rahilly & Wreinmann, 2007)
By 2025, 1 in every 4 students will initially be classified as an English learner. (Diaz-Ric 7 Weed, 2010)
With such rising statistics, it is our job to answer the call and teach these children as our own. To help them cherish their heritage, yet move forward with their future.
