In every classroom in a school, teachers are constantly conducting assessment whether it is formative or summative we are always focused on whether or not students know the material we are teaching at that time. For ELL students, this is a very scary process. However, there are ways that as general educators, we can help our ELL students to feel comfortable in class and success. Here are some tips:
1. Make sure you have a copy of every ELLs PSP and you know their level of proficiency in English
2. Treat the ELL student as a member of class, allow them the opportunity to participate and shine in what they know
3. Communicate with the ELL student and ask them how they are doing in class and what they do or do not understand
4. Use the accommodations from the PSP in class, especially allowing them to sit close to the teacher so they can receive help them when needed
5. Become familiar with the WIDA CAN DO descriptors and the WIDA and TESOL standards and use them to guide instruction and assessment of ELLs.
